Week 36

Here are some highlights from the week...

Our mealworms are growing! The entomologists are excited to watch the metamorphosis of their mealworm larvae!

The farms are filling up! The first graders have purchased all of their animals and have been working hard at planning and calculating all of their farm purchases.

We had our final session with our Artist in Residency. The students were both scientists and artists as Karie showed the science behind clay and the first graders got to glaze their clay projects! A HUGE thank you to the parent volunteers for all their help!

Week 35

It was a busy week in Room 112!

The first graders received their Jr. Achievement diplomas this week, the first of many to come!

In writing we have really been working on convincing our readers. This week we focused on talking directly to our reader, just like a commercial! Beware, they are getting good at persuading!

The entomologists began their study of insects with mealworms. On Thursday, the entomologists got to go on a ladybug hunt outside in the Stephenson garden...there were tons of them! Ms. Pawol's mom provided all of the entomologists with their very own lady bug catchers, equipped with a magnifying lid!

She also gave them all their own crayon boxes with 48 crayons! We of course had to read "The Day the Crayons Quit" to ensure that we keep our new crayons happy :)

We ended the week with our Stephenson Talent Show - what a fun way to end the week!

Reminders:

5/24 -- Substitute day
5/26 -- Artist in Residence @ 8:30 - 10:00

Week 34

The first grade farmers have been busy adding to their farms and calculating costs. They are hard at work earning money and calculating costs using multiples of 5's and 10's.

In reading, our tricky word tool boxes are filling up! We are starting to add tools to our comprehension tool belts. As the first graders start reading more challenging books we want to make sure we can read the words AND understand what we're reading! The tool we focused on this week is rereading.

This week we had our final Junior Achievement lesson. The first graders have been learning about wants, needs and jobs, and had a chance to culminate their learning by creating their own businesses. It is safe to say that Room 112 is filled with bright and creative entrepreneurs!

We had our fabulous Artist in Residency, Karie, come on Friday afternoon! Karie will be coming again in 2 weeks (5/26) to finish teaching the first graders about clay art and helping them finish their own clay creations! If you are available to help out from 8:30am - 10:00am please let me know!
