Week 9

Here are some highlights from the week...

This week we touched on the comprehension strategy: compare and contrast. We read 3 books from the "Harry the Dirty Dog" series and we used a venn diagram to compare and contrast the different books. The first graders did a great job contributing and filling out our venn diagram!

On Thursday we had our first Art Literacy lesson! The first graders learned about Pop Art and had a chance to create their own. Our classroom windows are now covered with some very colorful crayons that truly POP! A HUGE thank you to Dana for teaching the lesson and to Heather, Cari and Jenn who helped the first grade artists - it would not be possible without you all!

We met with our 4th grade buddies and the fourth graders shared fairy tale stories that they had written. Then the buddies "rolled" their own monsters! To create their monsters, they rolled a die and what they drew depended on what number they rolled. There were some pretty spectacular monsters, and even some monster families! After drawing their monsters, the buddies worked to develop a fairy tale outline about their monsters.

We ended the week with a spooky silhouette art project and some skittle math! It was a sweet way to end the week :)

Week 8

Here are some highlights...

The first grade readers have been practicing their independent and partner reading habits. This week they practiced the three different ways to read to a partner:

  • Echo read (take turns reading the same thing)
  • See-Saw read (take turns reading different things)
  • Choral read (read the same thing at the same time)

When you are reading with your first grader at home, I encourage you to practice these different ways of reading together!

In writing, we are really working on taking a moment and adding details that help us "zoom in." The magnifying glass has become our small moments mascot that helps remind us to think about questions the reader might have, to zoom in on details and to stretch out our stories. I have read, and the students have shared some great small moment stories and I am excited for them to keep writing and sharing! They have been learning and practicing the writing process as a guide to to support them as writers. This is the writing process we have been following:

  • Think of an idea (a thing that happened to you, a thing that you do)
  • Plan (touch and tell your story with your invisible pencil)
  • Write!
  • Revise (reread and make sure your story has: who, what, when, where).

The week ended with the Missoula Children's Theater performance of Gulliver's Travels. It was a great way to end the week! Congrats to all of the first grade performers -- they did an amazing job!

Week 7

It was a short, but busy week...

On Tuesday we had sunny and dry Run for the Arts! Room 112 did an awesome job... wow are they fast! It was a busy and fun day that ended with a special popsicle treat for all of our runners!

In Writing, we started our Small Moments unit. The students are practicing the writing process and working on "zooming in" through their narrative writing. We have learned and been practicing the first two steps in the writing process: Think of an idea & Plan (touch, tell, sketch and write). When you are writing at home with your first grader, encourage them to plan out their writing before they start. This involves touching and telling the story out on the paper before writing. Ask your first grader to show you their invisible pencil!

Reminders:
10/19 -- Late Opening @ 10am
10/20 -- Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill
10/21 -- Missoula Performances @ 12:45pm & 7:00pm
