Week 27

This week was full of performances! On Thursday, the Missoula teachers came into our classroom and taught the first graders all about acting! On Friday we had the Missoula Children's Theater performance of Peter & Wendy. It was a wonderful show with an incredible cast of Stephenson students :)

For buddies this week, the fourth graders performed some magic tricks that they learned after reading about Houdini. After the magic, we took advantage of the dry weather and went outside for a buddy recess!

In both reading and writing we are focusing on non-fiction text! The first graders are both writers and teachers in our non-fiction chapter book unit. They have been using the writing process (thinking, planning, writing, revising) and have begun creating their very own non-fiction chapter books. The authors are excited to share all of their knowledge!

The week ended with a classroom visit from the leprechaun. The students wrote letters to the leprechaun asking him to come to the classroom, they must have been pretty convincing because he came to room 112 - and made quite the mess! I have posted some photo evidence below...

Week 26

Here are some highlights from the week...

This week we started our new reading unit! We are going to be focusing on reading, decoding and comprehending non-fiction text. In this unit we get to soar through space, swim in the sea, travel around the world and study lots of different topics - here we go!

In math, we packed up our suitcases and headed home from Antarctica. The penguin experts have studied and compared different types of penguins and even created their own paper penguins! We are starting our geometry unit and the first graders have begun studying and shapes.

This week we learned about Cesar Chavez and added him to our biography journals! The first graders are continuing to make insightful connections and ask deep questions to get to know these important people better!

3/13 - 3/17 -- Missoula
3/15 -- Spirit Day - Crazy Hair Day

Week 25

It was an exciting week!

Tuesday (2/28) was the 100th day of school...wow does time fly! We celebrated by creating 100 year old portraits. By the looks of it, the first graders will age well :)

In writing this week we focused on publishing our work. Each first grader chose one of their completed How-To writing pieces to publish. They rewrote their edited work and made a final "fancy" copy that will live in our Room 112 library for kiddos to read!

We celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday with Read Across America Day on Thursday.  All of the K-2 students lined the hallway at the end of the day and read. It was great to see all of the readers fill the halls of the school!
